The NHL Winter Classic is an annual outdoor ice hockey game played during the National Hockey League's regular season on or around New Year's Day. TNT was in need of a compelling introduction for the broadcast that showcased the history and endurance of Boston’s Fenway Park, the site of that year’s game.
