Custom Style Presets

← TerrainStudio Manual

A Custom Style pass renders the map through one of your own Mapbox styles instead of plain satellite. This is how you build a broadcast map look from separated layers — a matte fill, borders only, labels only, roads only — each exported as its own pixel-aligned pass, then composited in post.

Where the styles come from — Mapbox Studio

Custom styles are designed in Mapbox Studio (free, part of your Mapbox account):

  1. Open studio.mapbox.com and create a new style (start from a template or blank).
  2. Design the look you need — e.g. hide everything except administrative borders, or a flat matte land/water fill, or place labels on transparent.
  3. Publish the style, then open Share and copy the Style URL. It looks like mapbox://styles/your-username/cl0abc123....

Adding it as a preset

  1. In Settings → Custom Style Presets, type a Name (e.g. Matte, Borders, Labels).
  2. Paste the Style URL into the Style field — either mapbox://styles/owner/id or just styles/owner/id works.
  3. Click Add Preset. It now appears in the Custom Style pass dropdown on the Generate panel.

Use Update Selected / Delete Selected to manage existing presets. Each preset is reusable across every workflow.

Broadcast tip: make one preset per element — Matte, Borders, Labels, Roads — add them all as passes on the same locked area, and you get a stack of perfectly registered layers to build your final map from, exactly like the satellite + displacement passes.
